Rivian has not shipped native Apple CarPlay on the R1T or R1S. Official in-dash CarPlay from Rivian stays unconfirmed in our product sources, unlike Tesla's May 2026 announcement. Use the truck's own screen for vehicle controls, or mount an iPhone and run Car Play Connect as a CarPlay-style dashboard you can use this week.
Sit in a 2023 Rivian R1S with an iPhone 15 Pro on the dash, then try a 2019 Honda CR-V with wired CarPlay. The Honda puts Apple Maps on the center screen in about 5 seconds. The Rivian never offers that row. Keep gear, camera, and truck climate on Rivian glass. Put Apple Music and a bigger speed readout on the phone if you want them in your eyeline.
The 30-second test
Park first. Stay out of Drive. Then ask one question: does this Rivian show Apple CarPlay at all?
- CarPlay row is present and connects — use it. Stop reading workarounds.
- Row is missing — native CarPlay never shipped on that truck. Pick Rivian software, wait, or a mounted iPhone.
- Forum screenshot from a stranger — not proof for your VIN. Trust the screen in front of you.
R1T and R1S trucks usually fail that CarPlay-row check. The rest of this guide is for that driveway test, not for a rumor about next year's software.
No CarPlay on the glass
Run a CarPlay-style dash on the iPhone you already mount
Car Play Connect Mount Mode puts a GPS speedometer, Apple Maps or Google Maps, and large tap targets on the phone — the Rivian screen keeps the truck.

Step 1: Confirm CarPlay is missing on your Rivian
Native Apple CarPlay only appears when the automaker builds it into the car. Rivian's exact submenu labels are not confirmed in our sources, so do not hunt for a made-up path like Settings → Network → CarPlay. Open the center-screen settings and the connectivity / phone area. Search the list for CarPlay, Apple CarPlay, or phone projection.
Give the search 30 seconds. A missing row is the decision you can verify. Apple's CarPlay overview shows how the feature is supposed to look when a car supports it. Rivian's site is the place to re-check vehicle software later — not a Facebook share.
Skip this step and you will buy a mount or an adapter for a problem the truck already solved. Finish the check parked, with the iPhone unlocked and Bluetooth on, so a shy wireless prompt cannot hide.
Step 2: Drive on Rivian's own screen
The free path is the one already bolted to the dash. Leave navigation, media, and Bluetooth calling on Rivian's display. No extra app has to wake for that.
Pair the iPhone under the truck's Bluetooth / phone settings once, while parked. Queue a playlist before you roll. Let the factory voice assistant handle simple media if you already use it. Vehicle controls stay on the big glass, which is where they belong.
Limitation: this is not Apple CarPlay. The iPhone app grid, CarPlay widgets, and a custom CarPlay connect sound do not appear on Rivian glass. Owners who want Apple Maps, Apple Music, or a karaoke-style lyrics line in the same layout as a Honda need a second screen — the phone.
Step 3: Mount the iPhone for a CarPlay-style dash
Mount Mode in Car Play Connect turns the iPhone into a CarPlay-equivalent dashboard when the car has no native CarPlay. The product page writes that job for Tesla and pre-2016 cars. A Rivian is the same job: factory glass for the vehicle, iPhone for Apple apps.
- Install Car Play Connect: Auto Sync from the App Store. The download is free. iPhone needs iOS 16.3 or later.
- Lock the phone in a secure dash or vent mount. Plug in power. Do this before you shift out of Park.
- Open Mount Mode. Set the GPS speedometer to mph or km/h. Day/night auto-switching is built in.
- Open Apple Maps or Google Maps full-screen when you want turn-by-turn on the phone. Voice-only mode hides the map when you do not need to look.
- Use the driver-mode buttons for volume, next track, and end-call. Hands-free dialing is a tap on the contacts grid.
Annual plan is $19.99/year if you subscribe after the free download. The App Store listing rates the app 4.6 from 2,700+ ratings. Custom CarPlay startup sounds need a CarPlay session, so they will not chime on Rivian glass that never connected.
Want a lyrics line on the phone while a time-coded track plays? Dynamic Lyrics can sit on the iPhone screen in other no-CarPlay cabins. Enable it in the app, then play Apple Music or Spotify.
Step 4: Decide whether to wait for official CarPlay
Waiting is a real choice if you only want projection on the factory screen. Do not spend $129 on a Tesla-branded dongle hoping the Rivian browser will behave like a Tesla.
Tesla announced CarPlay in May 2026 for some Hardware-4 Model 3 Highland (2024+), Model Y Juniper (2025+), and Cybertruck vehicles. July 2026 updates left that rollout delayed. Pre-2024 Teslas likely never get it. Our Tesla CarPlay 2026 update tracks that timeline. Rivian has no matching ship window in those same sources.
Re-open rivian.com and the truck's own release notes every few months. A CarPlay row in Settings is the only proof that matters. Until that row exists, treat influencer timelines as unconfirmed.
Rivian vs Tesla vs a mounted iPhone
Compare the four honest options before you buy a mount or sit on a rumor.
| Path | Where it shows | What it costs | When it works | When it fails |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native Rivian CarPlay | R1T / R1S center screen | Included if Rivian ships it | Only if your software lists CarPlay | Missing row — not available on that truck |
| Rivian built-in apps | Factory glass | $0 extra | Every R1T and R1S | No Apple CarPlay UI on the glass. |
| Wait for official Rivian CarPlay | Factory glass, later | $0 | After Rivian ships a real row | No confirmed date in our sources |
| Car Play Connect Mount Mode | Mounted iPhone | Free download; $19.99/year if you subscribe | Any Rivian you can mount a phone in | Not on Rivian glass; you look at the phone |
| Tesla official CarPlay (comparison) | Tesla screen (planned) | Included if Tesla ships it | Announced May 2026 for some 2024+ Hardware-4; delayed as of July 2026 | Pre-2024 Teslas likely never get it |
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Rivian decide to add Apple CarPlay?
No confirmed in-dash Apple CarPlay decision from Rivian appears in our product sources. R1T and R1S trucks still use Rivian's own center screen, with no CarPlay row we can point to. Tesla at least announced a plan in May 2026; Rivian has no matching public ship date here. Drive the truck software, or mount an iPhone and run Car Play Connect if you want Apple Maps, Apple Music, and calls on a phone-sized dash today.
Does the Rivian R1T have Apple CarPlay?
No. The Rivian R1T does not ship native Apple CarPlay on the center display. Park and look under the truck's screen settings for a CarPlay or phone-projection row — if the row is missing, the pickup never enabled it. Apple publishes a CarPlay overview for how the feature looks when a car supports it. Use Rivian navigation on the glass, or mount an iPhone for a CarPlay-style layout.
Does the Rivian R1S have Apple CarPlay?
No. The Rivian R1S does not ship native Apple CarPlay on the center display either. The SUV runs Rivian's own maps, media, and phone UI. A missing CarPlay toggle is the decision you can verify in the driveway, without waiting on a rumor. Keep vehicle controls on the Rivian screen. Put Apple apps on a mounted iPhone if you want that layout.
Can I get CarPlay on a Rivian with an adapter?
Not as a confirmed path on this site. Hardware CarPlay adapters named for Tesla are documented for Tesla screens, not Rivian glass. Do not assume a Tesla dongle will project onto an R1T or R1S. A mounted iPhone running Car Play Connect is the workaround we can describe honestly. Skip any listing that promises the Rivian center screen will suddenly become CarPlay.
What works instead of CarPlay in a Rivian?
Rivian's own maps, media, and Bluetooth phone UI on the center screen, plus a mounted iPhone if you want Apple apps in front of you. Car Play Connect Mount Mode adds a GPS speedometer, Apple Maps or Google Maps full-screen, and driver-mode buttons for volume, next track, and end-call. Download is free; the annual plan is $19.99/year.
How is Rivian's CarPlay decision different from Tesla's?
Tesla announced CarPlay support in May 2026 for some Hardware-4 models, then delayed the rollout as of July 2026. Pre-2024 Teslas likely never get it. Rivian has no matching announcement in our verified sources. Owners on the road still lack native CarPlay in both cabins. The practical move in either vehicle is a securely mounted iPhone.
