To disconnect an iPhone from a car, unplug the USB cable or let wireless CarPlay drop when you turn off the ignition. For a disconnect that actually sticks, open Settings → General → CarPlay, tap the car, and choose Forget This Car. To remove the Bluetooth pairing too, go to Settings → Bluetooth and choose Forget This Device.
Rental counters hand over everything from an iPhone 11 to an iPhone 17 these days, and the last driver's CarPlay pairing does not always clear itself. Someone returns a loaner Honda CR-V and the next renter's iPhone still tries to launch CarPlay from a car they never plugged into. The fix depends on what you actually want: end this one drive, or make sure the car forgets your iPhone completely.
Quick check: temporary or permanent?
Before picking a method, figure out which job you actually need done. The four options below solve different problems, and skipping ahead saves a trip through settings menus you don't need.
- Just stepping out for a few minutes? Unplug the cable or let a wireless session drop. Methods 1 and 2 cover this.
- Returning a rental, lending the car, or selling it? Skip ahead to Method 3, and add Method 4 if someone else will drive it next.
- Want to hear that it worked?Method 5 adds a sound so you're not guessing.
Method 1: Unplug the cable (wired CarPlay)
Wired CarPlay ends the instant you pull the cable. The screen switches back to the car's own display within a second or two. No settings menu, no waiting around.
- Grip the cable at the connector, not the cord, and pull straight out.
- Works from either end — the iPhone side or the dash port.
- The car's native display returns almost immediately.
When it won't work: a car running CarPlay wirelessly has no cable to pull in the first place. Go to Method 2 instead.
Method 2: Let wireless CarPlay disconnect on its own
Wireless CarPlay connects over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi together, as Apple's own CarPlay overview describes. Break either link and the session drops.
- Turning off the ignition is the most reliable trigger.
- Walking far enough from the car also breaks the Wi-Fi link that wireless CarPlay depends on.
- The session typically ends within a few seconds either way.
When it won't work: both of these only pause the session. Get back in the car and CarPlay reconnects on its own, which is by design, not a bug. For a disconnect that doesn't come back, use Method 3.
Method 3: Forget This Car for a disconnect that sticks
Settings → General → CarPlay lists every car your iPhone has ever paired with, wired or wireless.
- Open Settings → General → CarPlay on the iPhone.
- Tap the car's name in the list.
- Choose Forget This Car.
This removes the CarPlay pairing specifically. The iPhone stops offering CarPlay the next time it sees that car, by cable or over the air. It's the right move for a rental you're returning, a loaner, or a car you just sold.
When it won't work: if the car isn't listed here at all, the pairing may already be gone, or it only ever connected over plain Bluetooth and never launched CarPlay. Check Settings → Bluetooth instead — Method 4.
Method 4: Forget the Bluetooth pairing too
Forgetting CarPlay alone leaves the Bluetooth connection standing. Contacts, call history, and audio can still sync to the car's own system even after Method 3.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth.
- Tap the blue (i) next to the car's name.
- Tap Forget This Device, then confirm.
This clears the pairing completely. The car no longer sees the iPhone at all, for calls, audio, or CarPlay. Use this one before you hand over the keys to a new owner, a rental counter, or anyone else who shouldn't see your contact list on the dash.
When to skip it: still want hands-free calling, just not CarPlay's screen? Method 3 alone is enough. Don't forget the Bluetooth device for that.
Method 5: Confirm the disconnect with a sound
None of the four steps above tell you, out loud, that the disconnect actually worked. Car Play Connect's Disconnect Sound does.
Open the app, go to Sounds, and set a Disconnect Sound that's separate from the Connect Sound. Pick a built-in preset or import your own file. Setup takes about 30 seconds. From then on, a short chime plays the moment CarPlay actually drops, wired or wireless, so you're not left guessing whether the cable came out clean.
The same app also puts a widget galleryon the CarPlay screen for the next car you connect to — weather, clocks, battery, and more — once you're done disconnecting from this one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I disconnect my iPhone from my car for good?
Open Settings → General → CarPlay, tap the car, and choose Forget This Car. That stops CarPlay from launching automatically the next time you get in. If you also want the car to stop showing your contacts, calls, and audio, go to Settings → Bluetooth, tap the (i) next to the car, and choose Forget This Device.
How do I turn off CarPlay without unpairing my iPhone?
Unplug the USB cable for wired CarPlay, or turn off the ignition for a wireless session. Both end the connection within seconds. Your pairing stays intact, so CarPlay starts again the next time you plug in or start the car. Use Forget This Car instead if you want it to stop reconnecting automatically.
How do I disconnect Bluetooth from my car?
Open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone, find the car in the list, tap the blue (i) icon next to its name, then tap Forget This Device. This removes the pairing completely, so the car no longer shows your contacts, calls, or a CarPlay prompt. Do this before selling, returning, or renting out a car.
Why does CarPlay keep reconnecting automatically?
CarPlay is built to reconnect on its own once a car is paired, wired or wireless. Unplugging the cable or turning off the ignition only pauses that session, and the pairing itself stays in place. Forget This Car, or Forget This Device under Bluetooth, is the step that actually stops the automatic reconnect.
Does unplugging the cable delete my CarPlay widgets or settings?
No. Unplugging only ends that drive's session. Any CarPlay widgets, your connect sound, and other settings saved in Car Play Connect stay exactly where you left them for next time. Forgetting the car removes the pairing, not your app's saved setup.
How do I turn off CarPlay on my iPhone directly?
There is no single on/off switch for CarPlay on the iPhone itself. Unplug the cable, end a wireless session by turning off the car, or open Settings → General → CarPlay and choose Forget This Car for a disconnect that actually sticks between drives.
