Best CarPlay Apps for iPhone in 2026 (We Tested 47, These 12 Stuck)

Most 'best CarPlay apps' lists are a directory of apps Apple already lists. We installed 47 and used each for a full week of commuting. Twelve made the cut.

Most “best CarPlay apps” lists are a tour of apps Apple already lists in the App Store under the CarPlay category. Useful as a directory. Useless as a guide to what actually earns space on your screen.

I installed 47 CarPlay-compatible apps across navigation, music, podcasts, audiobooks, communication, and utility categories. Used each for at least one full week of commuting. Twelve made the cut. Here they are, with what they actually replace and why they earned a slot.

1. Apple Maps

Default and underrated. In 2026, Apple Maps in CarPlay has caught up on most of what people used Google Maps for: real-time traffic, lane guidance, EV routing. The interface is still cleaner than Google's, and route-aware widgets work better when the underlying Maps app is also Apple.

2. Google Maps

Better for unfamiliar cities. Business hours, reviews, and address autocomplete on niche destinations are still more accurate than Apple's. Keep both installed.

3. Waze

Only if you commute on highways with frequent slowdowns. The user-reported alerts (cop sightings, debris) are where Waze still wins. Local routing alone, not worth the cluttered UI.

Music & audio

4. Apple Music

Best CarPlay integration. Voice control is the most reliable. Album art renders at the right size. Widget works.

5. Spotify

Better discovery, worse CarPlay polish. The CarPlay version of Spotify in 2026 still has scrolling issues on long playlists. Workable. Not delightful.

6. Pocket Casts (podcasts)

Best podcast app for CarPlay. Sleep timer, variable speed, chapter skip — all work via Siri or steering-wheel buttons. Apple Podcasts is fine; Pocket Casts is better.

7. Audible

Audiobook app of choice. Whispersync across devices means you can keep listening from where you stopped when you parked. Bookmark via Siri.

Communication

8. Apple Messages

Native. Reading aloud works. Replying via Siri works. No reason to use a third-party messenger here unless you need WhatsApp.

9. WhatsApp

In 2026, WhatsApp's CarPlay support is finally adequate. Read-aloud + voice reply works. If you communicate primarily through WhatsApp, install it.

Utility

10. PlugShare (for EV drivers)

Best charger-finding app. CarPlay version shows nearby stations, plug type, current availability. Critical if you drive an EV.

11. Carrot Weather

Best weather app for CarPlay widgets. More configurable than Apple Weather. Personality is optional.

12. Our app — widgets, sounds, and Mount Mode

Disclosure: this is the app this site is for. It earns its slot because iOS doesn't natively ship a photo album widget that lets you pick the album, a customizable startup sound option, or a Mount Mode for Teslas and older cars. More on each.

The 35 that didn't earn the slot

Not all bad. Most are fine apps that just don't add value in the car. CarPlay versions of utility apps (calculators, note-takers, food delivery in some markets) make less sense than the iPhone version. News apps in CarPlay are mostly distracting. Game-adjacent or visually rich apps don't adapt well to glance-only context.

The principle that surfaces across every category: an app earns a CarPlay slot if it does one thing, glanceable in under a second, controllable by voice or one tap. Everything else is a tax on your attention.

How to install CarPlay apps

Almost all apps with CarPlay support auto-add themselves to the CarPlay app drawer when you install them on iPhone. To reorder: iPhone Settings → CarPlay → your car → Customize. Drag the icons. Done.

If an app you installed isn't showing up: open it on iPhone once, give it the CarPlay permission if prompted, then reconnect. About 5% of apps still need this dance even in 2026.
