How to Turn Off CarPlay on iPhone

Every one of these is done on the phone — you never have to dig through the car's touchscreen menus. I've switched CarPlay off dozens of times across an iPhone 13, a 15 Pro, and a 2022 Mazda CX-5 with wireless CarPlay, usually because the wireless auto-connect kept firing the second I got near the driveway. The 30-second test: which “off” do you want?

“Turn off CarPlay” means four different things. Match your goal to the method before you start — each one targets a different layer of the phone.

• Just for this drive. You want it gone now, but fine to come back next time. Use Method 1.
• Stop it launching by itself. Wireless CarPlay fires the moment you get in and you want to pick when. Use Method 2.
• Off for this one car, for good. Selling it, returning a rental, or done with CarPlay in that vehicle. Use Method 3.
• Off on every car, permanently. A master block that survives re-pairing and restores. Use Method 4.

Method 1: Pause CarPlay from iPhone Control Center

The fastest phone-side stop. For wireless CarPlay, turning off Bluetooth ends the session in a couple of seconds — no reaching for the car screen. It comes straight back when you switch Bluetooth on again, so this is a pause, not a permanent off.

1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the iPhone to open Control Center.
2. Long-press the connectivity tile (top-left, with the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons).
3. Tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off. Wireless CarPlay ends within a few seconds.
4. Prefer to kill everything at once? Tap the airplane icon instead — it drops Bluetooth and Wi-Fi together.

When this won't work:wired CarPlay runs over the USB cable, not the radios, so Bluetooth and airplane mode don't touch it — you have to unplug the cable for that. Also note this ends Bluetooth audio and hands-free calling too, since they share the same radio.

Method 2: Stop wireless auto-connect in Settings

This is the most-asked version: you don't want to forget the car, you just want wireless CarPlay to stop launching itself every time you walk near it. iOS lets you keep the pairing but switch off the wireless transport, all from the phone.

1. Open iPhone Settings → General → CarPlay.
2. Under “My Cars,” tap the car you want to stop.
3. Toggle off Allow Wireless CarPlay.

Now CarPlay stays dormant until you plug in with a cable — wired still works, wireless won't fire on its own. Flip the toggle back on whenever you want wireless again. This is the setting to reach for if CarPlay keeps disconnectingand re-connecting mid-drive and you'd rather it just stayed off.

When this won't work:the toggle only appears after a car has connected at least once, so an empty “My Cars” list means there's nothing to switch off yet.

Method 3: Forget the car in iPhone Settings

Forgetting the car is the real “permanent off” for a single vehicle. The iPhone drops the pairing entirely — CarPlay won't reconnect wired or wireless until you go through first-time setup again. Use it when you're selling the car or handing back a rental.

1. Open iPhone Settings.
2. Tap General, then CarPlay.
3. Tap the car you want to remove (for example, “Mazda CX-5”).
4. Scroll down and tap Forget This Car, then confirm.

On iOS 26.2 and later, Forget This Car also clears the matching Bluetooth entry. On earlier 26.x builds a stale Bluetooth pairing sometimes survives — if so, also open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the (i) next to the car, and tap Forget This Device. One catch worth knowing: iOS stores the widget stack, the locked photo album, and the app layout per car, so forgetting the car wipes all of it. Method 4: Block CarPlay everywhere with Screen Time

This is the closest thing to a master off-switch on the iPhone. A Screen Time restriction blocks CarPlay from connecting to anycar, wired or wireless, and it sticks through re-pairing, a new SIM, and even a restore. It's the option for a phone that should never run CarPlay.

1. Open Settings → Screen Time.
2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn the top toggle on if it isn't already.
3. Tap Allowed Apps (older iOS labels it Allowed Apps & Features).
4. Toggle CarPlay off.

When this won't work:if Screen Time asks for a passcode you don't have, someone else manages the phone — a parent's controls or a work MDM profile. You can't change the restriction without that passcode.

Method 5: Turn off CarPlay's annoyances, not CarPlay

Plenty of “turn off CarPlay” searches really mean “make CarPlay stop doing this one thing.” You can switch off the specific behaviour and keep CarPlay itself, all from the iPhone. The three biggest offenders:

• An app that keeps auto-opening.Rearrange or remove it in Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize. Drag apps you never use into the lower “more apps” group so they stop grabbing the screen.
• Notifications popping up while you drive.Silence them per app in Settings → Notifications, or route the whole car into a Driving Focus(Settings → Focus → Driving) so only calls come through.
• Siri reading every message aloud.Turn it off in Settings → Notifications → Announce Notifications— switch off Messages, or the whole thing.
