Quick answer
You can't update CarPlay on its own — it ships inside iOS. To update it, open Settings → General → Software Updateon your iPhone and install the latest iOS. Then update your car's head-unit software through the maker, and update each CarPlay app from the App Store.
I've chased CarPlay updates across a 2019 Mazda CX-5 and a 2023 Ford Ranger, both paired to an iPhone 15 on Australian roads. The thing that trips people up: there is no “CarPlay” app to update. CarPlay is part of iOS. Update the phone and the CarPlay screen updates with it. Two other pieces — your car's own software and the apps you use — update separately, and I'll cover all three below.

The 30-second update check
Before you touch anything, work out what actually needs updating. Run these three checks in order — most people only need the first.
- Check your iOS version.On the iPhone, open Settings → General → About and read the Software Version line. Anything below iOS 26 misses the newest CarPlay layout.
- Check your car's software screen.In the head unit, look under Settings → System or About for a firmware or software version. Note it — you'll compare it to the maker's site.
- Check the App Store for pending updates. Open the App Store, tap your profile photo, and scroll to Available Updates. Maps, music, and messaging apps update here, not through CarPlay.

Step 1: Update iOS — this is CarPlay
Updating your iPhone's iOS is how you update CarPlay itself. Every new CarPlay feature — the iOS 26 widgets pane, Live Activities, the new look — arrives this way. Here's the sequence.
- Plug in and join Wi-Fi.iOS updates are large. Connect the iPhone to power and a Wi-Fi network so it doesn't stall or eat your mobile data.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.The phone checks Apple's servers and lists any update. Give it a few seconds the first time.
- Tap Update Now (or Download and Install).If it offers “Update Tonight,” the phone installs overnight while charging. Either works.
- Enter your passcode and let it restart.The phone reboots once or twice. Don't unplug it mid-install.
- Reconnect to the car. After the update, start the car and plug in (or wait for wireless). The refreshed CarPlay loads on the next connection.
When this won't work:older iPhones stop getting the newest iOS. If Software Update says your phone is up to date but you're still below iOS 26, your model has reached its last version — the CarPlay screen won't get newer features until you change phones. Step 2: Update your car's software
The car runs its own software, separate from the phone. Head-unit updates fix CarPlay bugs, add wireless support, and smooth out pairing. This is the step drivers skip, and it's often the missing one.
- Find your current version.In the car, open Settings → System → About (wording varies by brand). Write down the software or firmware number.
- Check the maker's site or app.Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Hyundai, and the German brands each publish head-unit updates. Search “[your brand] infotainment update” or check the brand's companion app.
- Update over Wi-Fi or USB.Newer cars download over the car's own Wi-Fi. Older ones need a USB stick loaded from the maker's site, then plugged into the car.
- Keep the engine running.Firmware updates can take 20–40 minutes. A flat battery mid-update can brick the unit, so leave the car on or on a charger.
When this won't work:not every car gets updates. Many budget and older head units ship their CarPlay version and never change it. If your maker lists no update, the car's CarPlay is as new as it gets — the phone (Step 1) is your only lever. Step 3: Update the apps on your CarPlay screen
The icons on your CarPlay home screen are iPhone apps. Maps, Spotify, WhatsApp, and the rest update through the App Store, not CarPlay. An out-of-date app is the usual reason a CarPlay app misbehaves or goes missing.
- Open the App Store and tap your profile photo.It's the circle in the top-right corner.
- Scroll to Available Updates and tap Update All.Or update just the app that's playing up — a navigation or music app, usually.
- Turn on automatic updates (optional).Settings → App Store → App Updates keeps them current, so your CarPlay apps stay fresh without you thinking about it.
When this won't work:a few apps drop CarPlay support between versions, or need a fresh sign-in after updating. If an updated app still won't show on the car screen, a CarPlay reset usually brings it back.

Does updating iOS update CarPlay?

Why won't my CarPlay update?
Usually because your iPhone has reached its last supported iOS. If Software Update says the phone is up to date but you're still on an old CarPlay, that model won't get newer features. On the car side, many head units never receive updates at all. Check both against the maker's and Apple's support pages to confirm.
Is there a separate CarPlay app to download and update?
No. CarPlay is part of iOS, not an app you install from the App Store. You can't download or update it on its own. The apps you see on the CarPlay screen — Maps, Spotify, WhatsApp — are separate iPhone apps that update through the App Store, but CarPlay itself only changes with an iOS update.
