Siri AI — the conversational, Apple Intelligence-powered Siri in iOS 27 — works in CarPlay on iPhone 15 Pro and newer, in English, outside the EU and China. If your iPhone qualifies there is nothing to install: update to iOS 27, make sure Apple Intelligence and Siri are on, and talk to the car as usual. Older iPhones keep the classic Siri.
Put an iPhone 16 Pro and a standard iPhone 15 in the same car on the same iOS 27 — same head unit, same steering-wheel button — and one holds a conversation while the other answers one command at a time. The car is never the variable.
What Siri AI is, and what changes in the car
“Siri AI” is the shorthand the press settled on for the rebuilt Siri in iOS 27: it keeps context across turns, can carry out multi-step requests, and comes with a standalone Siri app on the iPhone that stores your conversations. In CarPlay you get the same assistant, hands-free.
- Conversations, not commands.Ask, then follow up (“…and add a stop for coffee”) without starting over.
- Natural-language navigation.“Take me home but avoid toll roads” or “a route that stays off the highway” go straight into Apple Maps on the car screen.
- Synced history. What you asked in the car shows up in the Siri app on the iPhone, so you can re-read the answer after you park.
- Voice in more apps. iOS 27 gives developers a voice-control template for every CarPlay app category, so apps can add a spoken way in — once they adopt it.
It arrived with iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, alongside third-party widgets, the Now Playing mini-player and the other changes in our iOS 27 CarPlay update guide.
Step 1: Check the iPhone — the only gate that matters
Siri AI runs on the phone, so the only hardware question is whether your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence. Nothing about the car, the cable or wireless changes the answer.
- Gets Siri AI in CarPlay: iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 16e, every iPhone 17 model, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max.
- Keeps classic Siri in CarPlay:iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, every iPhone 14, 13, 12 and 11, and iPhone SE. They still get the rest of iOS 27's CarPlay changes — widgets, scrubbing, the mini-player, wallpapers.
- Two extras need even newer hardware: the customizable Siri voice and the improved on-device dictation require an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air.
Not sure which model you have? Settings → General → About → Model Name.
Step 2: Check language and region
A qualifying phone can still miss out on the two soft gates Apple applies to every Apple Intelligence feature.
- Language:English at launch — in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, India, New Zealand and South Africa. Apple has said more languages follow; set Siri's language under Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Language if the phone is on something else.
- European Union: not available at launch because of the Digital Markets Act. An EU iPhone keeps the classic Siri in CarPlay until Apple announces otherwise.
- China: Apple Intelligence, and with it Siri AI, is reported for a later iOS 27 point release there.

Siri sorted — now fill the dashboard
iOS 27 lets any Home Screen widget onto the CarPlay screen. Car Play Connect adds weather cards, clocks, a Photos tile and a car-brand logo tile designed for a glance — and a startup chime so you hear the car connect before you say a word. Free to try.

Step 3: Turn it on (and join the waitlist if you see one)
On a qualifying iPhone in a supported region Siri AI is on by default after the iOS 27 update. These are the three things to check if it is not.
- Settings → General → Software Update: iOS 27 or 27.0.1 installed, not just downloaded. Restart once after installing.
- Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri: Apple Intelligence on, Siri on, and “Listen for” set to Siri or Hey Siri so the car's button and the wake word both work.
- Settings → Siri: in the first weeks some phones showed a Join Waitlist button while Apple scaled access. If you see it, tap it; access is granted on the phone, nothing changes in the car.
Reconnect CarPlay after any change. Siri settings are read when the session starts, so a toggle made mid-drive takes effect on the next connect.
Step 4: Use Siri AI in the car
The trigger is unchanged — the steering-wheel voice button, a long press on the CarPlay home button, or the wake word — so there is no new gesture to learn. What changes is what you can say after that.
- Stack requests.“Navigate to the office, avoid the toll road, and text Anna I'm 20 minutes out” works as one conversation, with Siri asking back if something is ambiguous.
- Correct it.“No, the other Anna” or “make that 30” keeps the context instead of restarting.
- Ask questions on the move. Anything you would ask the Siri app — directions by description, a quick fact, what time a place closes — is answered aloud, with the chat kept in the Siri app for later.
- Expect apps to catch up.Voice control inside third-party CarPlay apps depends on each developer adopting Apple's new template, so coverage grows app by app through the iOS 27 cycle.

Ask Siri for a song — then see the words
Synced lyrics in Car Play Connect follow the track line by line, so the song Siri just queued comes with its words — the closest thing to a visual feed CarPlay allows while driving. Free to try.

What Siri AI cannot do in CarPlay yet
- No Siri app on the car screen. The Siri app is an iPhone app; in the car you talk to Siri, and the transcript lives on the phone.
- No vehicle controls. Standard CarPlay cannot reach climate, seats or windows. That lives in CarPlay Ultra, where the automaker decides what Siri can touch.
- No video, no AirPlay to the car via Siri. Those are separate iOS 27 features gated on the car maker, not on Siri.
- Not on an unsupported phone, ever. There is no setting, profile or downgrade that brings Siri AI to an iPhone 14 or a standard iPhone 15.

Siri AI not showing up? Rule out the plain Siri faults first
If Siri does nothing at all in the car — no response to the button, no wake word — that is not a Siri AI question. Work through these in order, then come back to Step 1.
- Siri off, blocked by Screen Time, or the car says “CarPlay not available, enable Siri”: how to enable Siri for CarPlay.
- Siri is on but cannot hear you or will not answer: Siri not working on CarPlay.
- CarPlay itself broke with the update: iOS 27 CarPlay not working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Siri AI work in CarPlay?
Yes, since iOS 27 (September 14, 2026). The conversational, Apple Intelligence-powered Siri runs through CarPlay for hands-free conversations: you can ask follow-up questions, hand it a task, and give Apple Maps natural-language requests such as a route that avoids tolls. It needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence; the car itself does not matter.
Which iPhones get Siri AI in CarPlay?
iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 model, iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro — any phone that supports Apple Intelligence. A standard iPhone 15, an iPhone 14 or older keeps the classic Siri in CarPlay on iOS 27. The customizable Siri voice and the improved on-device dictation go one step further and require an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air.
Why don't I have Siri AI in CarPlay?
Three gates, in order: the iPhone must support Apple Intelligence, the language must be English, and the region must be supported — not the EU at launch, and not China until a later iOS 27 point release. If all three pass, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and make sure Apple Intelligence is on; if a Join Waitlist button appears under Settings → Siri, tap it and wait for access.
Is Siri AI in CarPlay available in the EU?
Not at launch. Apple has said Siri AI is not initially available in the European Union because of the Digital Markets Act, and CarPlay uses the iPhone's Siri, so an EU iPhone keeps the classic Siri in the car for now. Apple has not published a date for the EU rollout.
Do CarPlay conversations save to the Siri app?
Yes. A conversation you have with Siri AI in the car syncs to the Siri app on your iPhone, so you can pick it up or re-read the answer after you park. The Siri app is new in iOS 27 and keeps chat history across your devices.
Can Siri AI control my car's climate or windows through CarPlay?
Not in standard CarPlay. CarPlay only exposes the iPhone side — maps, calls, messages, media and the apps on the car screen — so Siri AI works on those. Vehicle controls on the car's own display exist only in CarPlay Ultra cars, and even there the automaker decides what Siri can reach.
