iOS 27, released on September 14, 2026, is the biggest CarPlay refresh since widgets arrived in iOS 26. The headline changes: you can now put any compatible Home Screen widget — including third-party ones — on the dashboard, scrub through a song or podcast on a new larger progress bar, keep a persistent mini-player on screen, and you get Liquid Glass app icons and a new set of wallpapers. Video apps are finally allowed too — but parked only, and only where your car maker turns it on.
If you came in expecting iOS 27 to be a quiet, nothing-changed release for CarPlay, it is not. Below is what actually landed, how to set each piece up, and the one limit — video while driving — that genuinely has not moved.
The 30-second iOS 27 check
Do this before you dig into settings. It tells you what you are actually dealing with.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update and confirm iOS 27 is installed, not just downloaded.
- Plug into your car and watch the CarPlay screen. Your widgets from iOS 26 should still be there — now you can add more.
- If you are chasing video playback, know this upfront: nothing plays full video on CarPlay while the car is moving, in any version.

What's actually new in iOS 27 CarPlay
Six changes are worth knowing. The first is the one most people will notice day to day.
- Third-party Home Screen widgets.CarPlay is no longer limited to Apple's stock widgets. Any compatible iPhone Home Screen widget can now sit on the dashboard, and you can drag to rearrange, toggle Smart Rotate, and get widget suggestions.
- Now Playing audio scrubbing. A larger progress bar lets you grab and drag to a specific point in a song, audiobook, or podcast — not just skip tracks.
- A persistent mini-player. Artwork and playback controls stay in the corner while you use Maps or another app, so you are not bouncing back to Now Playing to pause or skip.
- Liquid Glass app icons. The refreshed iOS 27 icon style carries onto the CarPlay home screen.
- New wallpapers.A fresh built-in set in the Celosia design shared with iPhone and macOS, picked from the CarPlay screen's own Settings app.
- Dedicated video apps (parked, car-dependent). Developers can now build CarPlay video apps, but playback is limited to when you are parked and only works where your car maker enables it.
Method 1: Confirm you are running iOS 27
This step sounds obvious, but a pending download gets mistaken for a finished install all the time. Confirm it before you troubleshoot anything else.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- If iOS 27 shows as available, tap Download and Install.
- Restart the iPhone once the install finishes.
- Unplug and replug your CarPlay cable, or reconnect wirelessly.
When this will not help: your iPhone might not support iOS 27 at all. Apple sets a minimum device list for every iOS release, and it changes each year. If iOS 27 never appears on your phone, that model is not on this year's list.
Method 2: Add third-party widgets to the dashboard
This is the real upgrade. Before iOS 27 the CarPlay widget pane only offered Apple's own handful of tiles; now it opens up to the whole Home Screen widget ecosystem.
- Open Settings → General → CarPlay → tap your car → Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets and choose from any compatible widget, including third-party apps.
- Drag to rearrange, and toggle Smart Rotate or widget suggestions if you want CarPlay to swap tiles based on context.
Car Play Connect fits straight into this flow. Its widget gallery covers weather cards, date-and-time clocks, air quality, iPhone battery, year progress, your own photos, an AI Photo Widget, affirmations, faith verses, and country flags — laid out up to three per row. For the step-by-step on the picker itself, see how to add widgets to CarPlay.
Method 3: Use the new progress bar and mini-player
The Now Playing screen got the two changes drivers asked for most. Both work with Apple Music, Spotify, podcasts, and audiobooks.
- Scrub a track. The larger progress bar is easy to grab — drag it to jump to a point in a song or chapter instead of starting over.
- Keep the mini-player up. Open Maps or another app and the artwork and controls stay in the corner, so pause, skip, and track info are one tap away.
Want lyrics up there too? Car Play Connect's Dynamic Lyrics reads Apple Music or Spotify Now Playing data and highlights the active line as the song plays — a legal, driving-safe thing to watch where video is not.

Method 4: Set a new iOS 27 wallpaper
iOS 27 swapped the CarPlay wallpaper set for the Celosia design that matches iPhone and macOS, and moved the picker onto the car screen.
- With the car parked and CarPlay running, open the Settings app on the CarPlay home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper and choose one of the new built-in backgrounds; each has a light and dark rendering.
- Leave Appearance on Automatic so it switches to the dark version after dark.
There is still no “choose from Photos” option behind the icons. Our CarPlay wallpaper guide walks every route and has a per-iOS-version breakdown, including the honest workaround for getting your own photo onto the screen.
Method 5: Know the limits — video and your car maker
iOS 27 opened the door to CarPlay video apps, but read the fine print before you expect Netflix on your dash.
- Parked only. Any video app plays only when the car is in Park; on the move you still get a static cover image and audio.
- Your car maker has to enable it. Dedicated CarPlay video is gated on automaker support, so most cars cannot use it yet, even on iOS 27.
- No native connect-sound toggle. Apple still ships no Settings option for the CarPlay startup chime — Car Play Connect's Sounds feature hooks the session instead, with a preset or your own clip up to 5 seconds.
No CarPlay screen at all — an older car, or a Tesla without native CarPlay? Car Play Connect Mount Mode turns your iPhone into a dashboard with a GPS speedometer and full-screen maps. More background on the platform is on Apple's own CarPlay page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the new CarPlay features in iOS 27?
iOS 27 (released September 14, 2026) is the biggest CarPlay update since iOS 26. You can now add any compatible iPhone Home Screen widget — including third-party ones — to the CarPlay dashboard; scrub through a song, audiobook, or podcast with a new, larger Now Playing progress bar; keep a persistent mini-player with artwork and controls on screen while you use other apps; and you get refreshed Liquid Glass app icons and a new set of wallpapers. Developers can also build dedicated CarPlay video apps, but playback stays parked-only and depends on your car maker enabling it.
Can I add third-party widgets to CarPlay in iOS 27?
Yes. iOS 27 removes the old limit of Apple's handful of stock widgets — open Settings → General → CarPlay → tap your car → Widgets and add any compatible Home Screen widget. You can drag them to rearrange, turn on Smart Rotate, and get widget suggestions based on your driving. Car Play Connect's weather, clock, battery, air quality, and photo widgets slot into the dashboard the same way.
What is the new mini-player in iOS 27 CarPlay?
iOS 27 adds a persistent mini-player that keeps album artwork and playback controls in the corner of the screen while you browse Maps or other apps, so you no longer jump back to Now Playing just to pause or skip. It pairs with a new, larger progress bar you can drag to scrub through music, audiobooks, and podcasts.
How do I watch videos on CarPlay in iOS 27?
iOS 27 lets developers build dedicated CarPlay video apps, but playback is still limited to when the car is parked, and your car maker has to enable it — so most cars cannot use it yet. You cannot watch video on the moving driving screen. For something to look at on the move, Car Play Connect's Dynamic Lyrics shows synced song lyrics, which CarPlay does allow while driving.
Does iOS 27 change the CarPlay wallpaper?
Yes. iOS 27 ships a new set of built-in CarPlay wallpapers in the Celosia design shared with iPhone and macOS, and you now pick one from the Settings app on the car screen → Wallpaper. There is still no option to use your own photo behind the icons. Our CarPlay wallpaper guide has the full walkthrough and a per-iOS-version breakdown.
How do I check that my iPhone actually updated to iOS 27?
Open Settings → General → Software Update and look for the installed version number, not just an update sitting ready to download. A pending download is not an install. Restart the iPhone once it finishes, then reconnect CarPlay to confirm your widgets and settings carried over.
