If CarPlay stopped working after iOS 27, start with the two things the update itself touches: re-pair the car (Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Forget This Car) and re-check Siri and Screen Time. Then know that a missing Siri AI or missing video is a hardware gate, not a bug — no setting on the phone brings them to an unsupported iPhone or car.
The fixes below cover wired CarPlay, factory wireless CarPlay and wireless adapters alike, in the order Apple's own support flow and the reports since September 14, 2026 point to. Nothing needs a dealer, a downgrade tool or a new cable until Fix 8 — and most phones are back by Fix 3.
The 30-second test: what kind of broken is it?
Three questions sort “iOS 27 broke CarPlay” into the fix that actually applies.
- Does the car show the CarPlay icon at all? No icon on the head unit = pairing or restriction problem (Fix 2 and Fix 3). Icon shows but the screen is black or frozen = finish the install and restart (Fix 1).
- Wired or wireless? Wireless failing while a cable still works points at Wi-Fi, Low Power Mode or a VPN (Fix 7). Wired failing too is the cable, the port or the car (Fix 8).
- Is it “broken” or just “not there”? Widgets you cannot find, Siri that sounds the same as before, no video option — those are a moved menu and two feature gates, not failures (Fix 4 to Fix 6).
Everything in iOS 27 that genuinely changed for CarPlay — and what is gated behind which phone or car — is in our iOS 27 CarPlay update guide. This page is only about getting a dead or glitchy connection back.
Fix 1: Finish the iOS 27 install and restart both ends
A download that shows “iOS 27” in Settings is not the same as an install that finished. Major releases also leave the CarPlay service in a half-loaded state until the phone reboots, and the car has its own cached session that survives a phone restart.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update. If 27.0 or 27.0.1 is still offered, install it now — 27.0.1 (September 28, 2026) is a stability release even though its headline fixes are iPhone 18 Pro Face ID and touch.
- Restart the iPhone after the install completes, not just when prompted.
- Switch the car fully off, wait 30 seconds, and start it again so the head unit reboots its CarPlay stack too.
- If CarPlay does not auto-start, tap the CarPlay logo on the car's display — Apple lists this as a normal step, not a workaround.
When this won't help: if the CarPlay icon never appears on the head unit, the car does not know your phone any more. That is Fix 2.
Fix 2: Forget the car and set CarPlay up fresh
This is the fix with the best hit rate after any iOS upgrade, because the update changes what the phone advertises to the car while the car keeps the old profile. Apple's own support page puts it on the list; the part people skip is doing it on both sides.
- On the iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay → tap your car → Forget This Car.
- On the head unit: delete the phone from the Bluetooth or paired-devices list as well. A half-forgotten pairing on the car side is why the phone-only step often does not take.
- Wired: plug in with a known-good USB cable and accept every prompt fresh. Wireless: Settings → Bluetooth on, Settings → Wi-Fi on, then tap the Info button next to the car's network and confirm Auto-Join is on.
- Wireless-only car: press and hold the steering-wheel voice button so the car starts the handshake, then pick the car under Settings → General → CarPlay.

Connection back? Put your widgets on it
iOS 27 lets any Home Screen widget onto the CarPlay dashboard. Car Play Connect adds weather cards, clocks, a Photos tile for the album you pick and a car-brand logo tile, plus a custom startup chime so you hear the pairing succeed. Free to try.

Fix 3: Turn the three switches back on
CarPlay refuses to start when any one of three settings is off, and a major update is exactly when people discover one of them changed. Check all three even if you never touched them.
- Siri.Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri (it is Siri & Search on an iPhone without Apple Intelligence). CarPlay will not run with Siri off, full stop. If Siri is on but ignores you in the car, that is a separate problem — see Siri not working on CarPlay.
- Allow CarPlay While Locked.Settings → General → CarPlay → your car. With this off, CarPlay only starts if the phone is already unlocked when you plug in, which reads as “works sometimes”.
- Screen Time.Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions. If restrictions are on, open Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is allowed. This is Apple's step for “the car does not detect the iPhone”, and a family or work profile can flip it without you noticing.
Reconnect after changing any of them — CarPlay reads these at session start, not live.
Fix 4: Your widgets are not gone — the menu moved
The most-reported “iOS 27 broke my CarPlay” complaint is not a break at all. iOS 26 put widget settings under Customize; iOS 27 replaced that screen with a per-car Widgets menu that accepts any compatible Home Screen widget, including third-party ones.
- Open Settings → General → CarPlay → tap your car → Widgets. Your iOS 26 widgets carry over; iOS 27 just lists them differently.
- Tap Add Widgets to see every eligible widget. Drag to reorder, and toggle Smart Rotate or widget suggestions if you want the car to swap tiles by context.
- A third-party widget that used to show and now does not usually means that app has not shipped its iOS 27 update yet. Update the app, then reconnect CarPlay.
- Widgets listed but blank or stuck loading is a different fault with its own fixes — see CarPlay widgets not loading.
If you want tiles that are actually built for the car screen rather than shrunken phone widgets, the Car Play Connect widget gallery covers weather, date and time, battery, air quality, your own photos and more, laid out three to a row the way iOS 27 shows them.
Fix 5: No Siri AI in the car is a gate, not a bug
Plenty of “Siri is broken on iOS 27” posts are really “Siri sounds the same as before”. The conversational Siri AI that iOS 27 brings to CarPlay only exists on an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.
- Qualifying iPhones: iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and every iPhone 16, 17 and 18 Pro model. An iPhone 14, or a standard iPhone 15, keeps the classic command-only Siri in CarPlay — on iOS 27, forever.
- Language and region: Siri AI launched in English in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, India, New Zealand and South Africa. It is not available in the EU at launch, and not in China until a later iOS 27 point release.
- If your phone qualifies and it still is not there: open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and confirm Apple Intelligence is on. Some phones showed a Join Waitlist button under Settings → Siri in the first weeks; tap it and wait.
What Siri AI actually does in the car, and how the chat syncs back to the Siri app on the iPhone, is in Siri AI in CarPlay.

Car still refuses CarPlay? Run the dashboard on the iPhone
Mount Mode in Car Play Connect runs a CarPlay-style dashboard on the iPhone itself — large maps, a GPS speedometer and big driver buttons — the fallback for a head unit that will not pair tonight, a Tesla, or an older car with no CarPlay at all. Free to try.

Fix 6: No video or AirPlay to the car is your car maker's call
iOS 27 allows dedicated CarPlay video apps and AirPlay video to the car display — and the AirPlay menu on your iPhone may still show no car. Both features require the car maker to certify video on that head unit, and as of October 2026 no automaker has announced a car that does.
- If your car is not in the AirPlay list while parked, it is not enabled for video. Nothing on the phone changes that.
- Even where it is enabled, playback is parked-only; shifting into drive drops to audio.
- Every route that works today, including what plays while driving, is in how to play video on CarPlay.
Fix 7: Clear the wireless blockers iOS 27 did not clear for you
Apple says wireless CarPlay is more reliable on iOS 27, with better GPS and heading accuracy. That is a phone-side change and it does not undo a setting that was already blocking the link.
- Wi-Fi on, with Auto-Join.Wireless CarPlay runs over Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth. Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the car's network → Auto-Join on. A phone with Wi-Fi off pairs over Bluetooth and then drops.
- Low Power Mode, Personal Hotspot, VPN — off. Each one can stall the Wi-Fi handshake. Turn them off, reconnect, then turn them back on one at a time to find the culprit.
- Re-pair once on iOS 27. If the car was paired on iOS 26, do Fix 2 again now that the phone runs 27 so the car stores the new profile.
- Cars that offer both: toggle Bluetooth off, plug in, let wired CarPlay establish, then turn Bluetooth back on. It stops the head unit attempting a wireless handshake that stalls the wired one.
Drops that happen mid-drive rather than at startup follow a pattern worth diagnosing on its own — the wireless CarPlay not working guide walks it fix by fix.
Fix 8: Rule out the cable, the port and the car's firmware
Only after the software steps. Apple's first instruction for wired CarPlay is a different cable and a different port, because the data pins fail long before the charging pins do.
- Try a second USB cable you trust, in a second port. Some users report USB-C iPhones being fussy about particular third-party cables; a direct USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to USB-A cable, not a hub, is the cleanest test.
- Check your car maker's app or dealer for an infotainment firmware update — an older head-unit build can misread a newer iPhone.
- Using a wireless adapter? Look for a firmware update in its vendor app before you blame the car.
- Do not buy a “downgrade to iOS 26” tool. Apple stops signing the previous version soon after launch, so these either fail or strand you on an unsupported build — and every fault above has a fix on iOS 27.
If the car shows no CarPlay option in any condition, with any phone, the head unit may not support it at all — our CarPlay compatibility checker confirms your make and model year against Apple's list. Apple's full support flow is on Apple's “If you need help with CarPlay” page; the September 17 breakdown of which iOS 27 features actually work in which car is on MacRumors.
Symptom after iOS 27: which fix to try first
Match what you see on the car screen to the first fix worth your time.
| Symptom since iOS 27 | Most likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Car shows no CarPlay icon at all | Stale pairing or Screen Time block | Fix 2, then Fix 3 |
| Icon shows, screen black or frozen, audio still plays | Half-finished install, cached session | Fix 1 |
| Works on cable, fails wireless | Wi-Fi off, Low Power Mode, hotspot or VPN | Fix 7 |
| Works only when the phone is already unlocked | Allow CarPlay While Locked is off | Fix 3 |
| Widgets missing from the dashboard | Menu moved; third-party app not updated | Fix 4 |
| Siri sounds exactly like before | iPhone without Apple Intelligence, or unsupported region | Fix 5 (not fixable) |
| No video option, car missing from AirPlay | Car maker has not enabled video | Fix 6 (not fixable) |
| Random disconnects on a cable | Cable data pins, port, head-unit firmware | Fix 8 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did CarPlay stop working after updating to iOS 27?
Most post-update failures are a stale pairing, not a broken iOS. The car still holds the old connection profile, so the first fix is Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Forget This Car, then a fresh setup. Second most common: the update left Siri or a Screen Time restriction in a state that blocks CarPlay. Work through the fixes in order and the real bug cases are rare.
Does iOS 27 have a CarPlay bug?
Apple has not acknowledged a CarPlay-specific bug in iOS 27. The reports since September 14, 2026 — black screen after connecting, wireless failing while wired works, random disconnects — are the same families of complaints every major iOS release produces, and the same fixes clear them. iOS 27.0.1 (September 28) shipped Face ID and touch fixes for iPhone 18 Pro, not a CarPlay patch.
Why are my CarPlay widgets missing after iOS 27?
Usually the widgets are still there — the menu moved. On iOS 27 they live under Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Widgets → Add Widgets; the old Customize screen is gone. Widgets you set up on iOS 26 carry over. If a third-party widget vanished, that app needs an iOS 27-ready update before it reappears in the list.
Why don't I have Siri AI in CarPlay on iOS 27?
Because it is gated on the phone, not the car. Siri AI needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence — iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone Air, or any iPhone 16, 17, or 18 Pro — and it launched in English only, in eight countries, and not in the EU or China. An iPhone 14 or a standard iPhone 15 keeps the classic Siri in CarPlay, and that is not a fault you can fix.
Can I downgrade from iOS 27 to fix CarPlay?
Not safely, and you do not need to. Apple stops signing iOS 26 shortly after each release, so the paid 'downgrade' tools either fail or leave you on an unsupported build. Every CarPlay failure mode after an update has a fix on iOS 27 itself — re-pair, the three switches, cable, car firmware. If you have a genuine regression, Apple's point releases are the route back, not a third-party downgrade.
Did iOS 27.0.1 fix CarPlay?
No. iOS 27.0.1, released September 28, 2026, fixed a Face ID issue and touchscreen responsiveness on the iPhone 18 Pro. If CarPlay broke for you on iOS 27.0, installing 27.0.1 is still worth doing — it restarts the phone and reloads the CarPlay service — but do not expect it to be the fix on its own. Keep going with the pairing and settings steps.
