Why Bluetooth connects but CarPlay doesn't

Bluetooth and CarPlay are two different connections, even though they start together. Bluetooth handles calls and basic audio. CarPlay needs a faster pipe, so wireless CarPlay pairs over Bluetooth and then hands the session to a private Wi-Fi link between your phone and the car. Wired CarPlay skips Wi-Fi and runs over the USB cable instead.

That split is why your phone can show “connected” while CarPlay does nothing. The Bluetooth half succeeded. The CarPlay half — Wi-Fi, the right pairing type, or a permission — failed. Here's how the common causes map to the fix.

Fix 1: Turn Wi-Fi back on (wireless CarPlay needs it)

This is the single most common cause, and it catches people because Wi-Fi feels unrelated to the car. It isn't. Wireless CarPlay carries its whole screen over a direct Wi-Fi link. If Wi-Fi is off — even if you turned it off at home to save battery — CarPlay has no data path, so it never launches. Bluetooth keeps working, which is what fools you.

3. On the head unit, open the smartphone or connectivity menu and choose “Set up CarPlay” (not just “Pair phone”). The wording varies by brand.
4. Accept the pairing prompt on both the car and the iPhone. First connect takes 20–40 seconds.

Fix 3: Turn off Low Power Mode, Hotspot, and VPN

Three background settings quietly break the wireless CarPlay link even after it's set up. If CarPlay worked yesterday and stopped today, one of these is usually why.

• Low Power Mode.It throttles background Wi-Fi to save battery, which starves the CarPlay link. Turn it off in Settings → Battery, or tap the yellow battery icon in Control Center.
• Personal Hotspot.When your hotspot is on, the iPhone's Wi-Fi radio is busy serving other devices and can't hold the private CarPlay link. Turn it off in Settings → Personal Hotspot.
• VPN and content blockers. Some VPNs intercept the local network traffic CarPlay uses. Disconnect the VPN, or set it to skip local connections, then reconnect.

Fix 4: Clear the CarPlay block in Screen Time

If CarPlay is missing from Settings entirely — not even listed — a Screen Time restriction is hiding it. This happens after restoring from a backup, or if a family member set up restrictions. The fix is one toggle.

1. Open Settings → Screen Time.
2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
3. Tap Allowed Apps (or “Allowed Apps & Features” on iOS 26).
