Fix 1: Turn on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (BMW is wireless-only)

In my experience it's the most common BMW CarPlay problem, and it catches people who assume Wi-Fi is optional. Wireless CarPlay needs Bluetooth to pair and Wi-Fi to carry the session. That holds even though you never join a Wi-Fi network in the car. If either radio is off, CarPlay won't start — or it quits mid-drive.

• Turn both on: iPhone Settings → enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Leave Wi-Fi on even with no network in range; CarPlay uses it as a private point-to-point link.
• Kill Personal Hotspot: an active hotspot fights the CarPlay Wi-Fi link, so CarPlay drops and only comes back when you next stop. Turn it off in Settings → Personal Hotspot.
• Toggle Airplane Mode: flip it on for five seconds and back off to reset both radios without forgetting the car.

Fix 2: Reboot iDrive with the volume-knob hold

A frozen or half-loaded iDrive shows a stuck “connecting” spinner or a blank CarPlay box. Rebooting the head unit clears it without touching your settings. It is the single most reliable BMW fix after the radios.

Press and hold the volume knobon the center console for about 30 seconds, until the screen goes black and the BMW roundel reappears. That is a soft reboot. If the first hold doesn't land it, let iDrive boot all the way back up, then repeat the hold once more before you move on.

Fix 3: Delete the phone and re-pair through your BMW ID

If CarPlay worked for months and then quit, a stale pairing is the likely culprit. Clearing both sides and pairing fresh fixes handshakes that iDrive gets stuck on. Do it in this order so no old profile is left behind.

• On iDrive: open the Bluetooth / Mobile Devices menu, select your iPhone, and delete it. On newer cars, remove it from your BMW ID driver profile too.
• On the iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay → tap the BMW → Forget This Car. Then Settings → Bluetooth → forget the BMW entry as well.
• Pair again: in iDrive choose Add New Device → Apple CarPlay, then on the phone accept the Bluetooth request and the CarPlay prompt. Keep the phone unlocked and close to the console during pairing.

Fix 4: Update iDrive and your iPhone software

Old iDrive software and a new iOS don't always get along. When one side updates and the other falls behind, the wireless handshake can turn flaky — on any generation. Updating both sides is worth a try when the basics don't land.

• Check the car: on iDrive 7 and 8, look under Settings → System → Software Update, or update over-the-air through the My BMW app when the car is on Wi-Fi.
• Older cars: iDrive 6 (NBT Evo) cars update at the dealer or via a USB map/software package — don't shut the engine off mid-install.
• Check the phone: iPhone Settings → General → Software Update. On my own cars a fresh iOS update was often what coincided with CarPlay acting up, so it's worth making sure the phone is current before you dig deeper.

Fix 5: Confirm CarPlay is switched on in the iDrive apps menu

BMW famously charged an annual CarPlay subscription on some 2019 cars, then reversed course in December 2019and phased out the fee, making CarPlay standard. So the fee is gone — but on a used BMW, CarPlay can still sit switched off in the menu, which looks exactly like a broken feature.

• Find the toggle: in iDrive, open the connection or apps menu (Communication → Mobile Devices, or the CarPlay tile) and make sure Apple CarPlay is enabled for your phone.
• Check ConnectedDrive: on older cars the CarPlay entitlement lives in your BMW ConnectedDrive account — a used car bought without transferring the account can drop it. Sign in to the BMW ConnectedDrive portal and confirm CarPlay shows as active.
