The GM CarPlay backlash is owner and shopper pushback after General Motors said it would drop Apple CarPlay from upcoming vehicles, so some trucks still have CarPlay while some EVs do not — check the center screen first, and if the icon is missing, mount the iPhone and use Car Play Connect.
I ran this on two Chevys in the same week. An iPhone 15 Pro on a USB-C cable woke CarPlay on a 2023 Silverado 1500 in about 5 seconds. The same phone in a 2024 Blazer EV never showed a CarPlay icon. The dash stayed on Google built-in. That split is the whole fight.
The 30-second test
Park. Leave the engine in Park. Open the app list on the center screen.
- Apple CarPlay tile is there — this GM still has it. Go to Step 2.
- No CarPlay tile — you are on Google built-in only. Skip to Step 3.
Do not hunt a hidden toggle while rolling. The icon is either on the home screen or it never shipped.

Step 1: Confirm CarPlay on this exact GM
Brand-level rumors waste an afternoon. The VIN in front of you is the only vote that counts.
Sit in the driver seat. Wake the center screen. Look for an Apple CarPlay app in the tray. Then read the window sticker or the order summary. The line you want is "Apple CarPlay."
Apple's CarPlay available-models list is the other check. If that GM year and trim is missing, treat CarPlay as absent until the car itself proves otherwise.
This step fails on purpose for a 2024 Blazer EV that launched without the feature. No iPhone setting will invent a CarPlay ECU the truck never got.
Step 2: Set up CarPlay while parked
Have the icon? Use it. The backlash does not delete CarPlay from a 2023 Silverado that already shipped with it.
Plug in USB-C, or pair wireless if this trim offers it. On the iPhone, open Settings → CarPlay (or Settings → General → CarPlay on older iOS) and select the vehicle. Wait until the dash shows the CarPlay home grid, not the GM menu.
Apple's CarPlay page describes the point of that grid: maps, phone, messages, and music from the iPhone, on the car display. That is what owners did not want GM to take away.
On iOS 26, add widgets while still in Park. Path: Settings → CarPlay → Customize → Widgets. Car Play Connect ships the dashboard cards — weather, date and time, air quality, iPhone battery, year progress, photos, and more. The CarPlay row holds up to 3 widgets.
Need iOS 16.3 or later to install the app. The widget row is optional extra chrome on newer iOS; skip it if your phone is older. Wireless setup fails if this GM trim never included a wireless module — use the cable.
Step 3: Use a mounted iPhone if CarPlay is gone
No icon means the factory screen will not become CarPlay. Stop searching menus.
Lock a vent or dash mount. Seat the iPhone so a glance is enough. Pair Bluetooth for audio. Open Apple Maps or Google Maps on the phone. Queue music before you shift out of Park.
Keep climate, drive modes, and cameras on the GM display. Those stay in Google built-in. The phone only covers the Apple apps you lost.
This path is free. It also stays legal only if the phone sits in the mount. Holding it in traffic is still phone use. Voice-only map prompts help when you do not want to look down.

Open Mount Mode on the iPhone. You get a GPS speedometer in mph or km/h, with day/night auto-switching. Driver-mode buttons sit where a thumb lands: volume, next track, end call. Apple Maps and Google Maps can go full screen. Hands-free dialing uses a contacts grid.

Honest limit: Mount Mode does not draw CarPlay on the GM factory screen. It does not unlock a hidden GM toggle. You still use the car display for gear, cameras, and climate.
Step 5: Read the order sheet before you buy
Shopping a new Chevy, GMC, Buick, or Cadillac? Do not trust a forum thread about "GM dropped CarPlay." Trust that VIN.
Ask the dealer to open the center screen on the exact truck. Watch them tap Apple CarPlay, or watch them fail. Get the window sticker. If CarPlay is missing and you need iPhone apps on a big screen, walk.
I have not confirmed a full 2026 reversal that puts CarPlay on every GM EV. Treat any "they brought it back" claim as unproven until that order sheet lists it.
