Quick answer

Honda's first Apple CarPlay cars were the 2016 Civic and Accord, added as a running change after Honda announced the feature in July 2015. The CR-V, Pilot, and Ridgeline picked it up for 2017, the Odyssey for 2018, and the Insight for 2019. Wireless CarPlay didn't reach any Honda until the 2021 Accord — six years after the wired version shipped.

Honda didn't add CarPlay all at once. It rolled out car by car over roughly four model years, starting with the two best-sellers and reaching the rest of the lineup last. Below is the dated order, then what each launch actually included.

Honda's CarPlay rollout, model by model

Honda confirmed CarPlay support model by model rather than in one announcement, so the dates below come from each car's own reveal, not a single press release.

ModelFirst CarPlay model yearNotes
Civic2016Announced July 2015, mid-cycle running change
Accord2016Same July 2015 announcement as the Civic
Clarity Fuel Cell2016Shipped with CarPlay from its US launch
Pilot2017Announced November 2016, EX trim and above
CR-V2017Fifth-generation redesign, revealed December 2016, from $24,045
Ridgeline2017Shared the Pilot's infotainment hardware
Odyssey2018Announced May 2017, EX trim ($33,860) and above only
Insight2019Optional on most trims of the revived hybrid

By the 2017 model year, CarPlay had reached five Hondas at once. Two years later it was effectively standard across the lineup, with trim-level gaps closing as each car went through its own refresh.

Civic and Accord: the first two, mid-2015

Honda confirmed CarPlay for the 2016 Civic and Accord in July 2015, a few months after both cars had already gone on sale. That made it a running change — dealers started fitting the updated head unit mid-model-year rather than waiting for the next full redesign. It also means two physically identical 2016 Civics can differ: build date decided whether CarPlay shipped, not trim alone. If you own one of these and the screen still won't connect, that's almost always the USB port or cable, not the car missing the feature — see Honda CarPlay not working for the fix.

CR-V, Pilot, and Ridgeline followed for 2017

Honda revealed the redesigned 2017 CR-V in December 2016, the 2017 Pilot a month earlier in November, and the 2017 Ridgeline carried the same infotainment stack over from the Pilot. All three used the same Display Audio touchscreen, which meant the same trim-level cutoff Honda had already drawn on other cars: CarPlay came with the upgraded screen, not the base radio. On the CR-V, that meant EX trim and above; on cheaper LX trims, the smaller non-touch display kept CarPlay off the options list entirely for another model year or two.

Odyssey and Insight were the stragglers

The Odyssey didn't get CarPlay until Honda revealed the redesigned 2018 model in May 2017 — two years after the Civic and Accord, and only on the $33,860 EX trim or higher. The Insight followed in 2019 as an optional feature on most trims of the revived hybrid, closing out Honda's first wave of CarPlay rollouts. By then, the only mainstream Hondas still shipping without it were the cheapest trims of each car, not whole model lines.

Wireless CarPlay took six more years

Every Honda above shipped wired-only. Wireless CarPlay didn't arrive on any Honda until the 2021 Accord, and even then it wasn't universal across trims right away. Honda went further than most automakers afterward: it rolled out a dealer software update that retrofits wireless CarPlay onto 2018–2022 Accords that originally shipped wired-only, at no charge, through a regular service visit. No other car on this list has that retrofit path — CR-V, Pilot, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Insight owners wanting to drop the cable need a wireless CarPlay adapter instead, which plugs into the existing USB port and adds the same cable-free connection for $40–80.

Check your own Honda in two minutes

  1. Find the model year on the driver's-door jamb sticker or the 10th character of the VIN.
  2. Match it against the table above — if your car and trim fall on or after its row, it almost certainly has wired CarPlay built in.
  3. Confirm on Apple's own CarPlay available-models list — it flags wired vs. wireless per trim, which the table above can't do for every regional spec.
  4. Plug in a known-good cable to the USB port marked with the smartphone icon, not a charge-only port, and watch for the CarPlay prompt.

If your car and trim are on the list but the prompt still never appears, that's a connection problem, not a missing feature — run the Honda-specific fix guide before assuming the car lacks CarPlay.

FAQ

What year did Honda get Apple CarPlay?

Honda first offered Apple CarPlay on the 2016 Civic and Accord, announced in July 2015 as a mid-model-year update. The CR-V, Pilot, and Ridgeline followed for 2017, the Odyssey for 2018, and the Insight for 2019.

Does my Honda have wireless CarPlay?

Only if it's a 2021-or-newer Accord, or a 2018–2022 Accord that's had Honda's retrofit software update installed at a dealer. Every other Honda on this list — CR-V, Pilot, Ridgeline, Odyssey, Insight — shipped wired-only; a wireless CarPlay adapter adds the cable-free connection to those.

Which Honda was the last to get CarPlay?

Among the mainstream lineup, the Insight was last, picking up optional CarPlay for the 2019 model year — three years after the Civic and Accord. Trim-level gaps lingered a little longer: some base LX trims on other models kept the smaller non-touch display, and with it no CarPlay, for a year or two after the top trims already had it.

Can I add CarPlay to an older Honda that never had it?

Not through software — a Honda built before its model's CarPlay year never got the hardware either. An aftermarket head unit from Pioneer, Kenwood, or Alpine adds real CarPlay to those cars, or a mounted iPhone running Car Play Connect's Mount Mode gives a CarPlay-style dashboard without touching the factory stereo.

Knowing which year your Honda got CarPlay settles whether the feature exists at all — getting more out of it once it's connected is a separate problem. Car Play Connect adds 124 car-tuned widget presets and a custom startup sound on top of whatever CarPlay your Honda already has. Free to try, annual subscription afterward.
