CarPlay Widgets Not Available? Here's Why — and How to Turn Them On

When there is no Widgets option on your CarPlay screen, the block is almost always your iPhone's iOS version or your car's head unit — not a broken setting. Here is how to tell which side is stopping you, and how to get widget tiles even on a car that never shows Apple's panel.

Quick answer

CarPlay widgets are unavailable when your iPhone is not on iOS 26, or your car's screen does not show the new widget panel. Update in Settings → General → Software Update, then open Settings → CarPlay → your car → Customize. Some older head units never show the panel, so a CarPlay app is the fallback for those cars.

I hit this on two cars the same week. My iPhone 15 Pro showed widgets fine in a 2023 Kia Sportage. A friend's 2019 Mazda CX-5 had no Widgets option at all — same phone, same iOS 26. The car was the block, not the phone. Here is how to tell which side is stopping you, in under a minute.

The 30-second check: your phone or your car?

Run these three checks before you change any setting. They tell you where the block is.

  • Open Settings → General → Software Update. If it does not say iOS 26 or later, your phone is the block. Widgets on the car screen did not exist before iOS 26.
  • Connect to your car and look at the CarPlay home screen. You want a column of tiles on the right, or a separate Widgets page you can swipe to.
  • No column, but iOS 26 is installed? Then your car's screen is the block, not your phone. No iPhone setting fixes that.

That last case is the one most guides skip. If the panel simply is not there on an updated phone, you are not doing anything wrong — your car just does not expose it yet.

Widgets on any car screen

Car won't show the native widget panel? Get widget tiles anyway.

Car Play Connect draws 11 CarPlay widget tiles inside its own car screen — Photos with album lock, weather, a clock, and a GPS speed tile — so you are not stuck waiting on a head-unit update that may never ship.

Step 1: Confirm your iPhone runs iOS 26 or later

The native widget panel shipped with iOS 26 in June 2025. On iOS 18 and earlier there is no Widgets option anywhere, so this is the first thing to rule out.

  • Path: Settings → General → Software Update. Install iOS 26 or later.
  • Then: reboot the iPhone, reconnect to your car, and look for the widget column.

When this will not help:if your iPhone is too old to install iOS 26, it will never show CarPlay widgets. Check whether the update is even offered for your model on Apple's CarPlay overview. If it is not, upgrading the phone is the only real fix.

Step 2: Check your car actually shows the widget panel

The widget panel is a car-side feature. The carmaker has to support it, so even a perfectly updated iPhone can come up empty in an older car.

  • How to check: connect, then look for the tile column or a swipeable Widgets page on the CarPlay home screen. If you only see the classic app grid, your car is on the old layout.
  • Aftermarket units:Pioneer and Kenwood screens often need a firmware update from the maker before the panel appears. Check the maker's support page for your model.

Honest caveat:a few older cars will never get the panel, even on the latest iOS. You can confirm whether your car supports CarPlay at all on Apple's list of CarPlay cars, but panel support is newer than CarPlay itself, so a supported car is not a guarantee.

Step 3: Turn on Widgets in Settings → CarPlay

Once the phone and car both qualify, the panel is opt-in. You pick which tiles show, and the choice saves per car.

  • Path: Settings → CarPlay → tap your car → Customize → Widgets.
  • Add up to five and drag to reorder. The layout sticks to that car.

If the Widgets row is missing here, you have not cleared Step 1 or Step 2 yet — go back and confirm both. One more gotcha: a major iOS update can wipe the stack, so an empty panel sometimes just needs the widgets re-added on this screen. Our step-by-step guide to adding CarPlay widgets covers the reorder and remove flow in more detail.

Step 4: Add widget tiles that work on any head unit

If your car will not show Apple's panel, an app is the honest fallback. A CarPlay app renders its own screen on any CarPlay head unit, so it can show widget-style tiles that the native panel cannot on your car.

This is exactly what the CarPlay widgetsin Car Play Connect do. The tiles live inside the app's own CarPlay screen, which loads whether or not your car supports the iOS 26 panel.

  • Install Car Play Connect, then open it once on your iPhone.
  • Open it on the car screen from the CarPlay app grid.
  • Pick your tiles: Photos locked to one album, weather, a clock, or a GPS speed readout.

The honest limit:these tiles live inside the app's screen. The app does not inject widgets into Apple's home-screen panel on a car that lacks it — nothing can. It is a workaround for older cars, not a way to unlock the native panel.

The fallback that ignores your car's age

Skip the head-unit lottery.

Car Play Connect puts a Photos, weather, clock, and speed tile on your car screen without waiting on a firmware update — useful when your car is stuck on the old CarPlay layout.

CarPlay widget compatibility at a glance

Three things must line up for the native panel to appear. Here is what each one needs and how to check it.

Still no Widgets option? What your symptom means

Match what you see to the real cause. Two symptoms look alike but need different fixes.

  • No Widgets option, or no tile column at all. That is a compatibility gap — the phone or the car does not qualify. Work through Steps 1 to 3 above.
  • The column shows, but the tiles are blank or stuck. That is a refresh bug, not a compatibility one. Our CarPlay widgets not loading fixes clear that in a few minutes.

Want the full list of which native tiles are worth a slot once the panel does appear? The iOS 26 CarPlay widgets rundown ranks all eleven.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my CarPlay widgets not available?

Your CarPlay widgets are not available for one of two reasons: your iPhone is not on iOS 26, or your car does not show the new widget panel. Widgets on the CarPlay screen arrived with iOS 26 in June 2025. Update in Settings → General → Software Update, then reconnect. If iOS 26 is installed but there is still no Widgets option, the block is your car, not your phone.

Do all cars support CarPlay widgets?

No. The widget panel is a car-side feature, so the carmaker has to add it. Most 2022-and-newer cars show it on iOS 26, but some older or aftermarket head units never will. If your car does not expose the panel, no iPhone setting can force it. A dedicated CarPlay app is the honest fallback for those screens.

Which iPhones support CarPlay widgets?

Any iPhone that can install iOS 26 supports CarPlay widgets. Widgets on the car screen do not exist on iOS 18 or earlier. Open Settings → General → Software Update to see if iOS 26 is available for your model. If your iPhone is too old to update, it cannot show CarPlay widgets, and the panel will stay missing until you upgrade the phone.

Can I get CarPlay widgets without iOS 26?

Not the native ones. Apple built the CarPlay widget panel into iOS 26, so iOS 18 and earlier have no Widgets option at all. The only way to get widget-style tiles on an older iPhone is a CarPlay app that draws its own tiles inside its car screen. That works below iOS 26, but it is a workaround, not the native panel.

Why is there no Widgets option in my CarPlay settings?

There is no Widgets option when your iPhone is below iOS 26, or your car does not support the panel. Open Settings → CarPlay → your car → Customize. If Widgets is missing there, first confirm iOS 26 in Software Update. If iOS 26 is installed and the row is still gone, your car is the limit, not the setting.

Do CarPlay widgets work on wireless CarPlay?

Yes. Wireless and wired CarPlay both show the widget panel on iOS 26 — the connection type does not matter. What matters is the iOS version and whether your car exposes the panel. If widgets appear when wired but not wireless, that is a connection glitch, not a compatibility one. Reconnect wireless CarPlay and the widgets should return.
