How to Edit CarPlay Widgets

I manage a five-widget CarPlay stack on an iPhone 15 Pro across two cars — a 2021 Toyota RAV4 and a 2019 Mazda CX-5. The first thing that trips people up is simple. They see the widgets on the car screen and try to press and hold them there, like on the iPhone home screen. Nothing happens. CarPlay widgets are read-only on the dashboard.

Every edit — reorder, swap, remove, or change what a widget shows — happens in iPhone Settings. This guide walks all four, in the order you'll usually want them. Start with the 30-second check so you know your car can show an editable stack at all.

The 30-second check: can your CarPlay widgets be edited?

Editable widgets need two things. Run these checks before you go hunting for controls that may not exist on your setup.

• iOS 26 or later.Widgets on CarPlay shipped in iOS 26 (June 2025). On iOS 18 and earlier, there is no Widgets menu to edit. Check iPhone Settings → General → Software Update first.
• A car with the widget pane.Look at your CarPlay home screen. If it has a right-side panel with a stacked widget, you can edit it. If it's only rows of app icons, your head unit doesn't render widgets, so there's nothing to reorder.
• The Widgets menu on your iPhone.Open Settings → General → CarPlay → tap your car → Customize. If you see a Widgets row, you're set. In iOS 26 CarPlay may also sit near the top of Settings, labelled CarPlay.

Method 1: Reorder your CarPlay widget stack

Reordering is the edit most people want. The widget at the top of the stack is the one you glance at most, so put your priority there — maps, music, or your speedometer. You drag the order on the iPhone, not the car.

1. Open Settings → General → CarPlay. Tap the name of the car you want to change. Each paired car keeps its own stack, so pick the right one.
2. Tap Customize, then Widgets. The top section shows your active stack, up to five widgets. The bottom shows the gallery of everything your installed apps offer.
3. Drag by the handle. Press the grip icon on the right of a widget and drag it up or down. The top slot shows first on the car screen.
4. Reconnect to see it. The new order syncs on the next CarPlay connection. If you reordered while connected, unplug and plug back in to force the refresh.

When this won't work:if you only have one widget, there's nothing to reorder — add a second from the gallery first. And the change won't always appear live; a reconnect is the reliable fix.

Method 2: Swap widgets in and out of the stack

Swapping means removing a widget you don't use and adding one you do. This is how you “change which widgets” show on CarPlay. The five-slot cap means every swap is a trade — drop one to make room for another.

1. Go back to the Widgets menu.Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize → Widgets, the same screen as Method 1.
2. Remove one you don't want. Tap the red minus button on a widget in the active stack, then confirm. It drops back into the gallery below, not deleted, just off the stack.
3. Add a replacement.Scroll the gallery and tap the green plus on the widget you want. It jumps into the active stack. Repeat until you've filled your five slots.
4. Missing a widget you expected? Its parent app must be installed on the iPhone. No Spotify app means no Spotify widget. Install the app, open it once, then check the gallery again.

Method 3: Change what a widget shows

Editing a widget's content is different from moving it. Here you change the album a Photos widget rotates, the city a Weather widget reads, or the list a Reminders widget pulls. Each widget carries its own settings.

1. Open the Widgets menu.Same path: Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize → Widgets.
2. Tap the widget in the active stack. A configuration screen opens if that widget supports one. Not every widget does, but most Apple ones do.
3. Pick the content.Choose an album for Photos, a saved city for Weather, or a specific list for Reminders. Pick a real album, not the “recommended” default, so you control what shows.
4. Back out and reconnect. The change saves when you leave the screen and appears on CarPlay after the next connection.

Method 4: Edit a widget stack in a car without iOS 26

If your car has no widget pane, or your iPhone can't run iOS 26, you can't edit the native stack — it isn't there. The workaround is to run an editable stack on the phone's own screen instead, in any car ever made.

1. Mount the iPhone at eye level.A $15–25 vent or windshield mount is the only hardware you need.
