Toyota CarPlay Not Working — Camry, RAV4 & Entune Fix Guide (2026)

Toyota runs two infotainment generations and the CarPlay failures split cleanly: Audio Multimedia (2022+) breaks wireless, Entune (2019–2021) breaks wired — and hides an enable toggle dealers forget to flip. Identify your system, then apply the right fixes.

Toyota runs two very different infotainment generations, and the CarPlay failures split cleanly along that line: the newer Toyota Audio Multimedia cars (2022+) mostly break wireless, and the older Entune cars (2019–2021) mostly break wired. Identify your system first and skip half this page.

TL;DR — the 60-second answer

Newer Toyotas (2022+): forget the car in both CarPlay and Bluetooth settings, reboot the head unit by holding the volume knob until the screen restarts, re-pair. Older Toyotas (2019–2021): use a certified data cable in the port with the smartphone icon and confirm CarPlay is actually enabled in Settings → Apple CarPlay on the head unit — Entune ships with it off on some trims.

Which Toyota system you have changes everything

  • Toyota Audio Multimedia (2022+): big touchscreen, wireless CarPlay standard. Failures are almost all pairing and Wi-Fi handoff issues.
  • Entune 3.0 (2019–2021):wired-only CarPlay. Failures are cable, port, and a CarPlay toggle buried in the head unit's own settings.

Camry and RAV4 fixes

The recurring Camry/RAV4 report is wireless CarPlay connecting, dropping at the end of the driveway, and reconnecting at the first stoplight — a hotspot conflict on the phone in most cases. Turn off Personal Hotspot before driving, or go wired for a week to confirm. If drops continue wired, it's the cable; the pattern-reading in our keeps-disconnecting guide applies directly.

Older Entune cars: the activation trap

Entune-era Toyotas hide a CarPlay enable toggle in the head unit: Settings → Apple CarPlay → Enable. Dealers occasionally deliver cars with it off, and a 12-volt battery disconnect can reset it. If CarPlay has never worked in your 2019–2021 Toyota, check that toggle before blaming the phone — it outranks every cable swap.

Fixes that apply to every Toyota

  • Head-unit reboot: hold the volume/power knob ~12 seconds until the screen cycles.
  • Firmware: Toyota ships infotainment updates over the air on Audio Multimedia cars (Settings → Software Update) and via dealers for Entune.
  • One phone at a time:two paired iPhones fighting for the session is a known Toyota quirk — delete the passenger's pairing if CarPlay picks the wrong phone.
  • iPhone side: the diagnostic flowchart covers the phone-side half in order.

FAQ

Why is my Toyota CarPlay not working after the update?

Updates on either side invalidate the pairing more often on Toyotas than most brands. Forget the car on the iPhone, delete the phone on the head unit, reboot both, re-pair. If it broke after a head-unit OTA specifically, a second reboot a day later resolves the stragglers.

Does Toyota have wireless CarPlay?

Standard on Toyota Audio Multimedia cars (most 2022+ models). Entune-era cars are wired-only from the factory — a wireless adapter converts them, and Toyota's USB power is strong enough to run every adapter we've tested.

Where is the CarPlay setting on a Toyota?

On Entune: head unit Settings → Apple CarPlay → Enable. On Audio Multimedia: there's no master toggle — pairing is managed under Settings → Bluetooth & Devices, and CarPlay starts automatically once a phone is paired.
