Quick answer

Waze not working on CarPlay while the rest of CarPlay runs fine is almost always one of four things: Waze got dropped from the car's Home screen, its Location permission is set to Never or Background App Refresh is off, the app or iOS needs an update, or CarPlay is holding a stale permissions snapshot from before you last changed something. Force-quit Waze and reconnect first — it clears the most common stuck state in under 10 seconds. If that doesn't fix it, work through the other four fixes in order below.

While you're in CarPlay settings

Make the CarPlay screen yours, not just Waze's.

Car Play Connect adds weather, clocks, air quality, and photo widgets to the same CarPlay screen Waze lives on — set up once, no re-pairing required.

Waze and CarPlay have a rockier relationship than Apple Maps and CarPlay. Apple Maps is built into iOS, so it rarely drops off the Home grid or loses a permission on its own. Waze is a third-party app sitting on top of the CarPlay framework, which means it has more places to break: the CarPlay Home screen customization list, Location settings, Background App Refresh, and the app's own build number all have to line up.

Five fixes clear the great majority of cases. Run them in this order — each one takes under a minute, and the list is sorted from most common cause to least.

TL;DR — the 30-second answer

Force-quit Waze on the iPhone, disconnect CarPlay for 10 seconds, then reconnect and open Waze from the car display. If it's still missing, check Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize — Waze has to be added back, because CarPlay doesn't always keep every app on the Home grid after an iOS update. Still stuck? Check Waze's Location permission (not Never) and Background App Refresh, then update Waze and iOS, then as a last resort Forget This Car and re-pair.

Why does Waze stop working on CarPlay?

There are five real causes, and they stack up roughly in this order of frequency:

  • Waze isn't on the CarPlay Home screen — it got left off Customize, or an iOS update reset the grid.
  • Location or Background App Refresh is off for Waze specifically.
  • CarPlay cached old permissions from before you last changed a setting.
  • Waze, iOS, or the car's head-unit firmware is out of date.
  • The CarPlay pairing itself is corrupted — rare, but it takes out every app, not just Waze.

If Apple Maps, Phone, and Music all work fine and only Waze is broken, the problem is almost certainly inside Waze or its CarPlay slot — start at Fix 1. If the whole CarPlay screen is acting up (not just Waze), the CarPlay not working flowchart walks the car-wide checks first.

Symptom-to-fix cheat sheet

Match what you're actually seeing to the fix that clears it — no need to run all five.

SymptomLikely causeFix
Waze icon is missing from the CarPlay Home screenDropped from Customize, or an iOS update reset the gridFix 2 — add it back in Customize
Waze opens but the map stays blank or whiteStuck session or a stale app buildFix 1, then Fix 4 if it recurs
Waze won't track your location or lane positionLocation permission below “While Using the App,” or Precise Location offFix 3
Waze works wired but not over wireless CarPlayWi-Fi is off, or Low Power Mode is throttling the wireless linkFix 3, then check Wi-Fi in Control Center
Maps, Phone, and Music are also broken, not just WazeThe CarPlay pairing itself is corruptedFix 5 — Forget This Car and re-pair

Fix 1: Force-quit Waze and reconnect CarPlay

This clears the single most common stuck state — Waze holding a bad session after a dropped GPS signal or a backgrounded call.

  1. On the iPhone, swipe up (or double-click the Home button) and swipe Waze closed.
  2. Disconnect CarPlay — unplug the cable, or turn off Bluetooth for 10 seconds on wireless setups.
  3. Reconnect and open Waze from the car's Home screen, not from the iPhone.

If Waze reopens clean, you're done. If the icon isn't there to tap, skip to Fix 2.

Fix 2: Put Waze back on the CarPlay Home screen

CarPlay doesn't always keep every app on the Home grid after an iOS update — Waze can quietly fall off the list without any error message.

  1. On the iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay.
  2. Tap your car's name.
  3. Tap Customize, find Waze in the app list, and tap Add.
  4. Reconnect CarPlay so the Home grid refreshes.

If Waze isn't in the Customize list at all, it isn't installed — or needs a fresh install. Get it from the App Store, open it once on the iPhone (this registers it with CarPlay), then return to Customize.

Fix 3: Fix Location and Background App Refresh

Waze needs more than a one-time Location prompt — it needs permission to keep tracking while the screen is off, and it needs to keep running in the background between app switches.

  1. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Waze — set to While Using the App at minimum.
  2. On the same screen, toggle on Precise Location if it's shown.
  3. Settings → General → Background App Refresh — confirm it's on globally and for Waze.
  4. On a managed/work iPhone, a greyed-out toggle means an administrator policy is blocking it — that's not a CarPlay setting and needs an MDM change, not a Waze fix.

Running Waze over wireless CarPlay specifically? Wireless CarPlay pairs over Bluetooth but streams the screen over Wi-Fi — if Wi-Fi is off or Low Power Mode is active, calls and audio can keep working while Waze never draws. Turn Wi-Fi back on in Control Center and turn off Low Power Mode before retrying.

Already fixed Waze? Make the rest of the screen better

A CarPlay screen that does more than navigate.

Weather, clocks, air quality, and your own photos — Car Play Connect fills the rest of the CarPlay widget stack while Waze handles the map.

Fix 4: Update Waze, iOS, and the head unit

An out-of-date build on either side of the CarPlay link causes the same symptoms as a permissions problem — a blank map, a frozen reroute, icons that don't respond.

  1. App Store → search Waze → Update if one's available.
  2. Settings → General → Software Update → install any pending iOS update.
  3. Check the car's infotainment menu for a head-unit firmware update, especially after buying a used car or going a long stretch without checking.
  4. Reconnect CarPlay after any update completes.

Fix 5: Forget the car and set up CarPlay again

Last resort, and the fix for the rare case where it isn't really a Waze problem — the CarPlay pairing itself is corrupted. You'll know this is the cause if Maps, Phone, and Music are also acting up, not just Waze.

  1. Settings → General → CarPlay → tap your car → Forget This Car.
  2. Restart the iPhone and, if possible, the car (turn it off and back on).
  3. Pair CarPlay fresh — plug in the cable, or for wireless, approach the car with the iPhone unlocked and confirm the prompt.
  4. Re-add Waze through Customize (Fix 2) and open it once from the car Home screen.

No CarPlay in the car at all — older model, or a Tesla built before the factory rollout? Waze still runs full-screen on a securely mounted iPhone. Mount Mode in Car Play Connect turns that same iPhone into a CarPlay-style dashboard — GPS speedometer and driver-mode buttons alongside Apple Maps or Google Maps full screen — for cars that never got native CarPlay.

FAQ

Why is Waze not working on CarPlay but Apple Maps is fine?

That points to the problem being inside Waze or its CarPlay slot, not the CarPlay link itself. Force-quit Waze, confirm it's still added under Settings → General → CarPlay → Customize, and check its Location permission. If Maps, Phone, and Music all fail too, skip ahead to Fix 5 and rebuild the car pairing instead.

How do I add Waze back to Apple CarPlay?

From the iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize, then tap Add next to Waze. Reconnect CarPlay so the Home grid refreshes. If Waze isn't listed at all, install it from the App Store, open it once on the phone, then return to Customize.

Why is the Waze map blank or white on CarPlay?

Usually a stuck session or a stale app build. Force-quit Waze, reconnect CarPlay, then update Waze from the App Store. If the map tiles stay empty after that, start navigation on the iPhone first, reconnect CarPlay, and open Waze from the car Home screen again.

Does Waze need Location set to Always for CarPlay?

Not always — While Using the App is enough for most drives, and Precise Location helps the map stay locked to your lane. Always helps in the cases where Waze needs to wake up as soon as CarPlay connects. Keep Background App Refresh on either way. A greyed-out toggle on a managed iPhone is an administrator policy, not a CarPlay setting.

Can I use Waze on CarPlay wirelessly?

Yes, if the car supports wireless CarPlay and Wi-Fi stays on. Wireless CarPlay pairs over Bluetooth, then streams the screen over Wi-Fi — if Wi-Fi is off, calls can keep working while Waze never draws. Turn Wi-Fi on in Control Center, turn off Low Power Mode, and retry. Wired USB is still the cleaner test if wireless keeps dropping.

What if my car doesn't have Apple CarPlay at all?

No CarPlay means Waze can't appear on the factory screen through Apple's interface. Run Waze on a securely mounted iPhone instead, or use Mount Mode in Car Play Connect for a CarPlay-style dashboard with Apple Maps or Google Maps full screen. Hardware CarPlay adapters exist for some cars too, but they cost more and need a compatible USB port.
