Yes. Every US Kia Telluride from the 2020 model year on includes Apple CarPlay. Early cars need a USB cable in the media port. Later years can pair wirelessly from the infotainment Device Connection menu. Park first, plug in or pair, tap Allow on the iPhone, and maps, calls, and music land on the center screen.
I ran the same test on two parked Tellurides last month. An iPhone 14 on a USB-A cable woke CarPlay on a 2020 LX in about 8 seconds. A 2022 EX on the same lot offered Apple CarPlay under Setup → Device Connection with no cable. Same nameplate. Two different first steps.
CarPlay is Apple's dashboard view of Maps, Phone, Messages, and music from your iPhone. The Telluride does not replace those apps. It mirrors them. That is why a dead cable or a charge-only port looks like "the car has no CarPlay" when the feature is sitting there.
The 30-second test
Park first. A driveway is fine. A red light is not. Then answer two questions before you buy a new cable.
- Front console USB — one port is media / CarPlay. Rear-seat ports are usually charge-only.
- Setup → Device Connection — if Apple CarPlay or Phone Projection is listed, the head unit already has the feature.
- No Device Connection row? Use the USB path in Step 2. Early 2020 cars are wired only.
Shopping a new one? Confirm the current model's infotainment list on Kia's Telluride page. The iPhone side of pairing is in Apple's CarPlay setup guide.
Step 1: Check your model year and USB port
Open the driver door. The certification sticker lists the model year. That number tells you which first step to try.
2020 Tellurides talk to the iPhone through a front USB media port. Later cars keep that port and may add wireless pairing. Do not guess from the trim badge alone. Open the screen and look.
On the Kia display, tap Setup (the gear) → Device Connection. Some years nest a second row called Device Connection Settings. Phone Projection and Apple CarPlay live there. No such menu means you still use USB.
Find the front USB that is marked for media, not the one that only charges. Newer Tellurides may use USB-C. Bring the cable that shipped with the iPhone.
Step 2: Connect wired CarPlay
Wired is the path that works on every Telluride with CarPlay. Use it on a 2020. Use it as a fallback on a later car when wireless flakes.
- Unlock the iPhone and keep it on the lock screen or Home.
- Plug into the front media USB. Wait up to 15 seconds.
- Tap Allow on the iPhone trust sheet. Confirm on the Kia prompt if one appears.
- Hold the voice button on the wheel if you want Siri after the icons load.
CarPlay should replace the Kia home layout with Apple's tiles. Maps, Phone, Messages, and music sit on that screen. Siri needs Listen for Siri turned on under Settings → Siri & Search on the phone.
Nothing after 15 seconds? Move to Fix 1. Do not keep swapping random cables in the rear console. Those ports often skip data.
Step 3: Connect wireless CarPlay when the car offers it
Skip this step on a 2020 that has no wireless row. Later Tellurides can pair from the Device Connection menu. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the iPhone must stay on.
- Park. Turn on iPhone Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- On the car: Setup → Device Connection → Apple CarPlay or Phone Projection.
- Select the iPhone and tap Allow on the phone.
- Some years ask for one USB handshake, then remember the phone.
After that, the screen should wake CarPlay when you sit down. Another remembered iPhone will steal the session. Forget the extra device on both sides if two phones live in the car.
Wireless will not start if the phone is in Airplane Mode, or if Bluetooth is off. It also fails when the car is still projecting to a forgotten pairing. Clear it, then retry once.
Step 4: Customize the CarPlay home screen
Native controls live on the iPhone, not in a hidden Kia submenu. Open Settings → General → CarPlay, tap the Telluride, then Customize. Drag apps into the order you want. Delete the ones you never tap.
On iOS 26, widgets can sit on the CarPlay screen. The path is Settings → CarPlay → Customize → Widgets. You add them per car. Up to three widgets share one row.
Car Play Connect ships a gallery built for that row: styled weather cards, date and time clocks, air quality, iPhone battery, year progress, your own photos, an AI Photo Widget, a MyCard car portrait, car-brand logos, affirmations, faith verses, football crests, and country flags. Each type is customizable — background color, your photos, day/night theme.
Want a different chime than Apple's 2014 default? Open the app, go to Sounds → Connect Sound, and pick a preset or import a short .m4a, .mp3, or .wav (up to 5 seconds). A separate disconnect sound is optional. The startup-sound walkthrough is five parked steps. Dynamic Lyrics can ride in the widget stack when you play a time-coded track on Apple Music or Spotify — the apple carplay lyrics app guide walks through picking one.
Do this in the driveway. The Telluride's center screen is still your phone. Reaching for it in traffic is still phone use.
Fix 1: CarPlay will not connect in the Telluride
Work these in order. Stop when the icons appear. Jumping around hides the simple port mistake.
- Wrong USB — front media port only. Rear and charge-only ports will not start CarPlay.
- Bad cable — use the Apple cable from the iPhone box. Charge-only third-party leads fail silently.
- No Allow tap — unlock the phone. Missed trust sheets sit in the notification shade.
- Forget the car — Settings → General → CarPlay → Telluride → Forget This Car. Pair again.
- Second phone — disconnect the other iPhone under Setup → Device Connection, then retry yours.
- Wireless leftovers — Bluetooth off, Airplane Mode, or a stale pair. Toggle Bluetooth, wait 10 seconds, pair once more.
Still blank? Power the car off, open the driver door, wait 30 seconds, and start again. Then try wired even on a wireless car. Apple's setup guide above is the iPhone half of the same checklist.
Turning CarPlay off is the reverse. Unplug the cable. Or disconnect under Device Connection. Or disable CarPlay for that vehicle on the iPhone. Music then falls back to Bluetooth audio only, without the CarPlay tiles.
Wired vs wireless on a Telluride
Use this as a parked cheat sheet. Your exact menu labels move a little by model year. The jobs stay the same.
| Job | Wired | Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| First setup | Front media USB + Allow on the iPhone | Setup → Device Connection; some years need one USB handshake |
| Daily drive | Plug in each time | Auto-connect after the first pair |
| Disconnect | Unplug the cable | Device Connection → disconnect, or forget on the iPhone |
| Usual miss | Rear charge-only USB | Bluetooth off, or another phone still remembered |
| Siri | Hold the wheel voice button after icons load | Same button, once CarPlay is on screen |
| Works on 2020 | Yes | Not on early wired-only cars |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Kia Telluride have Apple CarPlay?
Yes. US Kia Tellurides have included Apple CarPlay since the 2020 model year. A USB data port in the front console handles the first connection. Later years can also pair wirelessly from Setup → Device Connection. Park, plug in or pair, tap Allow on the iPhone, and the center screen shows maps, calls, and music. Confirm the current model's list on Kia's Telluride page if you are shopping.
Does the Kia Telluride have wireless Apple CarPlay?
It depends on year and trim. Early 2020 cars are wired only through the front USB media port. Later Tellurides add wireless pairing in Setup → Device Connection. Open that menu on your parked car. If you see Apple CarPlay or Phone Projection without a cable prompt, wireless is there. If not, use the USB cable. Wired CarPlay still works on every year that has CarPlay.
Why is my CarPlay not connecting in my Telluride?
Start with the cable and the port. Rear USB ports are often charge-only, so they will not start CarPlay. Use an Apple-certified cable in the front media USB, unlock the iPhone, and tap Allow. Then open Settings → General → CarPlay and forget the vehicle. Reboot the phone and the head unit. Wireless pairs fail when Bluetooth is off or another phone is still remembered.
How do I disconnect CarPlay in a Kia Telluride?
Unplug the USB cable, or disconnect the phone under Setup → Device Connection. On the phone, go to Settings → General → CarPlay, tap the Telluride, and forget the car or turn CarPlay off. That stops auto-reconnect the next time you sit down. Turning off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on the iPhone also drops a wireless session without deleting the car.
How do I customize Apple CarPlay on a Telluride?
On the iPhone, open Settings → General → CarPlay, tap your Telluride, then Customize to reorder apps. On iOS 26, add widgets via Settings → CarPlay → Customize → Widgets. Car Play Connect ships dashboard tiles for weather, clocks, air quality, battery, year progress, and photos, plus a custom connect sound and Dynamic Lyrics. Set those while parked so you are not tapping on the move.
How do I enable Siri for CarPlay in a Telluride?
Enable Siri on the iPhone, then hold the voice button on the Telluride steering wheel. Open Settings → Siri & Search and turn on the Listen for Siri toggle. Siri should appear on the CarPlay screen. Apple's CarPlay guide covers the iPhone side of that path. If the button does nothing, CarPlay is not connected, or Siri is off for the lock screen.
