CarPlay Apps: Which Ones Work on the Car Screen, and How to Add Them

I checked this across two setups: an iPhone 15 Pro on wireless CarPlay in a 2022 Mazda 3, and an iPhone 13 wired into a 2019 Ford F-150. The pattern held on both — the car screen only listed apps that had shipped CarPlay support. A couple I use daily, my banking app and a note app, simply weren't there, and no setting could force them on. Below is how to read what you've got, add more, and sort out the ones that go missing.

The 30-second test: is an app CarPlay-ready?

Before you dig through menus, check whether the app even supports CarPlay. Most “my app is missing” problems are really this — the app was never built for the car screen.

• Look at the App Store page. Open the app in the App Store and scroll to the screenshots and the Information section. CarPlay-ready apps usually show a car-screen shot or mention CarPlay by name.
• Look at the CarPlay Home Screen.Connect, then scan the icon grid. If the app isn't there and it isn't hidden, it doesn't support CarPlay — no setting adds it.
• Think in categories.Navigation, audio, calling, messaging, EV charging and parking apps can support CarPlay. Games, banking, social feeds and most video can't.

Step 1: See which apps already work on your CarPlay screen

When you connect, CarPlay shows a Home Screen of app icons. That grid isyour working app list. Here's how to read it and where the fuller picture lives.

1. Connect your iPhone to the car — cable or wireless — and wait for the CarPlay Home Screen.
2. Swipe through the icon pages. Every icon there is a CarPlay-ready app you already have installed.
3. Missing an app you expected? It either doesn't support CarPlay, or it's been hidden — Step 2 covers bringing it back.

Step 2: Add, reorder, and hide CarPlay apps

You control which apps appear, and in what order, from your iPhone — not from the car. This is where “missing” apps usually come back.

1. On your iPhone, open Settings → General → CarPlay and tap your car.
2. Tap Customize (it sits just below the app grid).
3. Tap the green + to add an app to the screen, or the red − to remove one.
4. Press and hold the drag handle and move icons to reorder. Put Maps and your main audio app up top.
5. Reconnect CarPlay — unplug or drop the wireless link, wait five seconds, connect again — to see the new layout.

When this won't work:if an app isn't in the Customize list at all, it doesn't support CarPlay — reordering can't add what was never built. The “installed but never appears” case is Fix 1.

Step 3: Get more CarPlay apps from the App Store

CarPlay apps come from the same App Store as everything else — they just have to declare CarPlay support. Here's how to find them, plus the part of the car screen Apple's directory can't cover.

1. Open the App Store and search by category — “navigation,” “podcasts,” “EV charging.”
2. On an app's page, scroll to the screenshots and the Informationsection. A car-screen shot or a CarPlay mention means it's ready.
3. Install it, open it once so it registers, then reconnect CarPlay. Its icon appears on the Home Screen — add it via Step 2 if it's hidden.

Apple's CarPlay directory is about apps— Maps, music, messaging. It doesn't cover the parts of the CarPlay screen that aren't apps: the iOS 26 widget stack, synced lyrics, or the startup sound. That's the gap Car Play Connect fills.

1. Install Car Play Connect from the App Store and open it once so its widgets register with iOS.
2. Open Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize → Widgets.
3. Add its tiles — battery, weather, music, photos — and drag them into the five-slot stack.
4. For lyrics or a custom startup sound, follow the in-app setup, then reconnect CarPlay.

One honest limit:it's an add-on for widgets, lyrics and sounds. It doesn't replace Maps or your music app, and it can't force a non-CarPlay app — like your bank — onto the screen. What it adds is the CarPlay surface Apple leaves empty.

Fix 1: An app you installed won't show on CarPlay

You installed an app, it claims CarPlay support, but the icon never shows. Work these in order — the first two clear most cases.

1. Open the app once on your iPhone and accept any permissions. Some apps only register with CarPlay after their first launch.
2. Check Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize and tap the green + if the app is sitting in the hidden list.
3. Check Screen Time: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps, and make sure neither the app nor CarPlay is switched off.
4. Update the app and iOS — CarPlay support sometimes arrives in an update.
5. Restart: disconnect CarPlay, restart the iPhone, then reconnect.
